Immunization with UV-induced apoptotic cells generates monoclonal antibodies against proteins differentially expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines

Early and differential diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) requires sensitive and specific tissue and serum markers. On the other hand, proteins involved in tumorigenesis are extensively modelated on exposure to apoptotic stimuli, including ultraviolet (UVC) irradiation. Hence, we generated monoclonal antibodies by using UVC-irradiated apoptotic cells of an HCC cell line, HUH7, aiming to explore proteins differentially expressed in tumors and apoptosis. We obtained 18 hybridoma clones recognizing protein targets in apoptotic HUH7 cells, and clone 6D5 was chosen for characterization studies because of its strong reactivity in cell-ELISA assay. Subtype of the antibody was IgG3 (κ). Targets of 6D5 antibody were found to be abundantly expressed in all HCC cell lines except FLC4, which resembles normal hepatocytes. We also observed the secretion of 6D5 ligands by some of the HCC cell lines. Moreover, cellular proteins recognized by the antibody displayed a late upregulation in UVC-induced apoptotic cells. We concluded that 6D5 target proteins are modulated in liver tumorigenesis and apoptotic processes. We therefore propose the validation of our antibody in tissue and serum samples of HCC patients to assess its potential use for the early diagnosis of HCC and to understand the role of 6D5 ligands in liver carcinogenesis. © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc

Effects of spinning technology on denim fabric performance

In this study it is intended to investigate the effects of yarn spinning technology on denim fabric performance. For this aim five different 100% Cotton Ne 16/1 yarn samples were produced with different spinning technologies namely; combed ring, compact, sirospun, Open-End (OE) rotor and vortex. Then denim fabric samples were woven by using these samples yarns only in weft direction. Breaking strength, tear strength, abrasion resistance, stiffness and stretch properties of denim fabric samples were tested. In order to understand the statistical importance of the spinning technology on denim fabric performance, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. Consequently, it is seen that yarns produced from different spinning technologies affect the woven fabric performance, significantly

Objective: In this study, socio-demographic and psychiatric evaluation of the patients who attempted suicide by drug intake was aimed. Material and Methods: Patients over the age of 18, who agreed to participate in our study, and admitted to the emergency department with conscious suicidal behavior between January 2009-January 2011 were enrolled in this prospective study. Results: A total of 122 patients were enrolled in the study. The most majority of the patients were consisted of female gender (68.9%), in the 18-24 age group, single, unemployed, graduate from elementary or high school, a member of a large family including 4-5 people, with a monthly income below TL 1000, and the individuals were found to be in economic distress. Chronic systemic disease, psychiatric disorders, and suicide attempts in the past, and a family history of suicide attempts were statistically significantly increased the assets of suicidal thinking. Most of the patients were diagnosed as depression and anxiety disorders, and they were recommended to use psychiatric drug therapy and psychiatric follow-up support to come again. Conclusions: Suicide motion, a method that is applied as a result of the social, economic, familial and psychiatric problems, with which individual faces, is a way of expressing oneself or a way of alternative solution according to the individual. Through the support given to individuals having suicide tendency, a decrease in suicide risk among the mentioned people can be actualized. For this purpose, the sociodemographic features of patients attempted suicide must be well known and must be evaluated by psychiatry

    Front-end process modeling in silicon

Front-end processing mostly deals with technologies associated to junction formation in semiconductor devices. Ion implantation and thermal anneal models are key to predict active dopant placement and activation. We review the main models involved in process simulation, including ion implantation, evolution of point and extended defects, amorphization and regrowth mechanisms, and dopant-defect interactions. Hierarchical simulation schemes, going from fundamental calculations to simplified models, are emphasized in this Colloquium. Although continuum modeling is the mainstream in the semiconductor industry, atomistic techniques are starting to play an important role in process simulation for devices with nanometer size features. We illustrate in some examples the use of atomistic modeling techniques to gain insight and provide clues for process optimization
